In Kindergarten children will be exposed to many different writing and reading activities using a variety of materials and forms. These materials include play dough, pencils, markers, crayons, and paint. They have been exploring these materials, as well as learning that writing conveys messages to others. Our drama centre has been a great opportunity for children to write signs and messages to explain the different parts of the centre. The math/science centre has been another area where students are able to communicate their findings in writing. Recently students have been making hibernation books. They are to use knowledge of letter sounds to complete the word of the animal that hibernates. This activity combines both letter sounds and knowledge the alphabet in order to write the sounds.
We have also been providing a variety of reading activities to give students the skills to begin their reading journey. Students may not be able to read at this level, however they are provided with the basic foundations to start. Students are reading during circle time, in the dramatic play centre, and during centre time. Students are required to read any completed work to go home. We hope with all of these opportunities students will continue to explore reading and writing throughout their life.
