Before the March Break, we did a mini unit on castles. The students were very interested in this topic and we got to learn some cool new things about castles! We began by turning our dramatic play into a castle. It had a kitchen, where the servants worked, turrets, a wall, knights, kings, queens, and even a few wizards! We added to this by having the children make their own crowns and shields. We brought the learning into science, art, outdoor education and language arts. In science, the children explored castles by building them on the carpet. They had different sections in their castle, such as sleeping quarters and a kitchen. They built big walls to protect them from attacks, and some even built cannons or catapults. In outdoor education we built castles out of the snow. They did a great job! In art students were able to paint a castle. After we painted the castle, they labeled them and then wrote a story about their castle. They had some very creative stories! Can't wait for you to read them! |
